Bret Culp
Bret Culp is an award-winning independent Visual Effects Supervisor and Second Unit Director who has contributed to over 60 feature films, miniseries, and television shows with three decades of industry experience.
After attending the Film and Photography program at Toronto Metropolitan University (Ryerson), Bret quickly advanced to Senior Artist at leading Toronto production companies, where he created acclaimed commercials and motion graphics for clients such as Coca-Cola, Canon, and The Discovery Channel. He received an Emmy nomination and won a PromaxBDA Award for creating the TekWar miniseries opening title sequence.
In 1994, Bret joined C.O.R.E. Digital Pictures, eventually helming its visual effects division. In 16 years, they contributed cutting-edge visual effects to over 120 films and television projects.
As a Visual Effects Supervisor, Bret collaborates closely with productions from conception to completion, leveraging his extensive creative and technical acumen to serve the story. He is a strong, inclusive communicator with an unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation.
Bret led visual effects teams to create stunning work on diverse projects such as Netflix's number one series, The Fall of the House of Usher, and Amazon/Alcon's The Expanse, picked the #1 TV show by Rotten Tomatoes 2020 Winter TV Scorecard boasting a 100% Tomatometer rating. Bret was both Visual Effects Supervisor and a Second Unit Director on Showtime's epic miniseries The Tudors, which received two Best Visual Effects Gemini Awards and two additional nominations over its four-year run.
He is a member of the Directors Guild of Canada (DGC) and the Visual Effects Society (VES), is a sought-after lecturer and juror, and holds positions on numerous advisory committees.
Bret is also a distinguished fine art photographer and author of the photography book The Beauty of Impermanence.
