Alex Lemke
Alex Lemke is a VFX Supervisor and Senior Compositor with 20 years experience in the Visual Effects Industry. He began his career as an optical cameraman and moved into digital effects at ARRI Munich, beginning in the scanning/recording and moving on to compositing on Flame and Cineon. His technical background in both optical and digital workflows and integral understanding of color pipelines provides a perspective unmatched in the industry.
Spending 3 years at Weta Digital in New Zealand and working on all 3 of the Lord of the Rings Films, Alex left Weta as a Sequence Supervisor, winning a VES award for best compositing for his work on “The Two Towers”.
Upon returning to his native Germany, Alex founded his own small VFX studio in Munich where he was VFX Supervisor managing all the supervision and VFX production on many German feature films including “Krabat”, “We are the Night” and the German film Prize winner “John Rabe”. His reputation for quality and efficiency garnered much attention in Germany and overseas allowing major studios and large VFX houses the confidence to farm out work to the small but talented team, led by Alex. Sequences on such films as “Sweeney Todd” and “2012” were delivered in this manner.
During his time in Munich Alex also worked with Velvet, a leading German Commercial Design house as a Senior Flame Artist on a variety of cutting edge commercials with accounts such as Mercedes Benz, Hyundai, Haagen Dazs and Visa.
Alex began sharing his vast knowledge with students as a lecturer in 2004 and in 2009 established the first Masters Program in digital compositing in Europe at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna as a full Professor. He is an exceptional professor combining theory and practice with enthusiasm and technological expertise. He students are currently employed at VFX studios around the world.
Alex’s most recent credit was as Senior Compositor for Peter Jackson’s latest epic VFX Masterpiece “The Hobbit” . Prior to that Alex was was honored to work very closely with Academy Award winning directors Joel and Ethan Coen as the VFX Supervisor for their latest film “Inside Llewyn Davis” and was Compositing Supervisor for David Chase’s “Not Fade Away”, both during his tenure at Framestore NY.
Other films of note that Alex has worked on over the years include “Dark City”, “Troy” and “Captain America”. Alex is a member of the VES and the German Filmakedemie. He has a passion for filmmaking and Visual Effects.
