Flip Phillips
Flip Phillips is a Professor of Motion Picture Science at RIT, where he focuses on virtual production, visual effects, and future imaging technologies. Previously a Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Skidmore College, he joined RIT’s MAGIC Center in 2019. Flip’s early background includes a BFA from Ohio State under computer graphics pioneer Charles Csuri and as the first 'Animation Scientist' at Pixar during its formative years. His research spans visual and haptic perception, 3D shape and material perception, and the consequences of vision restoration. Flip collaborates with research teams at Ohio State, MIT, Harvard, JLU Gießen, and beyond, and is a past editor of the Mathematica Journal. In his downtime, he can be found sculling on the Erie Canal or playing snare with the Avant Garde Alumni Drumline.
