Pixar’s universal scene description (USD) is an open source technology that is changing production pipelines around the world. Chris Rydalch will be recounting his trials and tribulations of developing a USD pipeline at studio scale. After the talk George Elkoura, Director of Engineering at Pixar Animation Studios, will be joining Chris for a Q&A session. This is your chance to gain a greater understanding of how USD can fit into your studio.
Chris Rydalch has worked in feature animation for 10 years, at Pixar, DreamWorks, and Blue Sky Studios. During that time he worked in production mainly as an effects and character simulation artist The last few years at Blue Sky were in Production Technology, helping design and develop a new pipeline around Conduit and USD. He is currently a Senior UX Designer at SideFX Software, helping to improve Houdini Solaris for studios and artists.
George Elkoura is a Lead Engineer at Pixar Animation Studios. He has many years of animation industry experience, First as an Engineer at Side Effects Software, working on Houdini, and later joining Pixar where he has been for the past 12 years. At Pixar, his current responsibilities include leading a team of engineers in delivering high-performance proprietary animation software to artists as well as open source software like USD, Hydra and OpenSubdiv to the industry.

Now that the 18th Annual VES Awards season is underway, we once again invite VES members to participate in our Nomination Panels. The Nomination Event will be held worldwide on January 4, 2020.
Any active VES member who can travel to one of the cities listed below may participate.
This is your chance to determine who will ultimately walk up to the podium on January 29, 2020, to collect a coveted VES Award. A single vote may make the difference between being nominated… or not… and that vote could be yours!
Past participants know that this is the must-attend event of the awards season. Not only will you view some of the most amazing visual imagery of 2019, you’ll get to see exclusive behind-the-scenes footage while participating in the single best networking opportunity of the year. It’s a chance to see old friends, meet the best and brightest in the visual effects field, and learn new techniques that you can apply to your own craft. All of that, plus the satisfaction of knowing that you have participated in choosing what will ultimately be the Nominations announced to the press for the 18th Annual VES Awards.
Judges who register to participate will receive information about specific times and locations from their local section representatives once their applications are received. If you are ready to make a difference, please submit your Panel Judge Application BELOW. Make sure you check the box indicating which of the Nomination Event locations you are applying for.
The Nomination Event is a full-day event held on Saturday, January 4, 2020 around the globe. Nominees will be announced on Monday, January 6, 2020. We look forward to receiving your Judge Application to make this year’s Nomination Event a success!

Chris Edwards, CEO of The Third Floor, will describe the humble beginnings of previsualization and demonstrate how modern previs techniques are being used to design innovative content for feature films, commercials, videogames, and themed attractions all around the world. Chris’ presentation will feature a case study on Alfonso Cuaron’s Academy Award-winning film Gravity. The presentation will also feature a panel discussion with experts from Sheridan College and the Screen Industries Research and Training (SIRT) Centre and Toronto based VFX Supervisor, Wesley Sewell representing the Visual Effects Society (VES) Toronto Section, followed by a Q & A session with the audience.
